President-elect Dr Mohmmed Muizzu said on Saturday that the Fushidhiggaru lagoon, which is to be reclaimed to provide housing in the Male area, will be reclaimed at a height of at least 3 metres, as a 'safe island' from the impacts of climate change.
Speaking to residents of the first phase of Hulhumale, Muizzu said the development of Fushidhiggaru lagoon will be done in such a way as to minimize the damage caused by climate change. The island will be dredged higher than the existing dredged areas, he said.
"It will have all the features of a safe island, including height. The project will be dredged at least three meters high and hopefully declared as a safe island to benefit the environment and adapt to all these coming climate changes," he said.
Speaking further about the land reclamation housing project, Muizzu said:
-
1,280 hectares to be drained; That is, an area three times larger than the two phases of Hulhumale
-
Gulhi and Giraavaru lagoons will also be dredged to gain the largest amount of land possible
-
With that, 65,000 people in the Male area will get housing as promised during his campaign
In addition, Muizzu said that housing projects will be implemented in different parts of the country as promised. However, he did not go into details in his speech.
