President-elect Dr Mohamed Muizzu's office on Sunday expressed concern over Urbanco's efforts to complete commercial transactions related to land in Hulhumale during the transition period leading up to his swearing-in on November 17.
In a statement, the Office of the President-elect said that it has received information that 40 different matters relating to business transactions involving land in Hulhumale are on the agenda for the next meeting of the Urbanco Board.
The office mainly expressed concerns about:
-
The transactions that were being conducted in a hurry at this stage
-
The transactions include the lease of land to foreign parties
“The office is concerned that the lands in Hulhumale are the most valuable assets in the capital of the country and that commercial transactions related to them are being conducted in a hurry at this stage,” the President-elect's office said in their statement.
"This will hamper the implementation of the policies of the new government and the entire Maldivian state will have to suffer as a result."
The office called on all agencies, institutions and companies to suspend such transactions at this stage and act in the "spirit of the transitional phase".
The office said it will take necessary steps through the legal system to prevent such incidents.
Urbanco could not be reached for comment.
