Lt. Gen. Abdullah Shamal, who served as the chief of defence force in the previous government, retired on Saturday after serving in the army for more than 35 years.

Shamal was appointed as the chief of defence force on December 11, 2018. 

He retired after the end of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's government on Friday.

Shamal has served in various ranks during his 35 years in the army. He served as Commander of the Male Area, Commander of Training and Doctoring, and Commander of the Marine Corps.

Shamal has also served as defence advisor at the Maldivian High Commission in New Delhi.

Shamal holds a Masters Degree in Defence and Security Analysis and a Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies.

During his 35 years in the army, Shamal has received 16 service medals and ribbons. These include the Presidential Medal, Distinguished Service Medal and Dedicated Service Medal.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who took the oath of office on Friday, has appointed Major General Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef as the chief of defence force.
