Youth ministry's mandate expands to cover arts, media

The ministry is run by Ibrahim Waheed, who is also the owner of Sangu TV.

The mandate of the youth ministry has been expanded to include media management and some functions previously under the arts ministry.

After President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was sworn in as president on Friday, 22 ministers in his cabinet were also sworn in.

President Muizzu's government has created four new ministries and divided some of the mandates of the previous ministries among the various ministries.

One of such ministries is the youth ministry where: 

  • The government has transferred the sports sector from the former Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry to Youth

  • Previously, the Home Ministry will handle matters such as registration of media outlets

With the changes, the name of the ministry has been changed from Ministry of Youth, Sports and Community Empowerment to Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts.

Some technical mandates:

  • To formulate and implement policies for the protection, revival and maintenance of various arts

  • To formulate and implement the necessary rules for the protection, revival and maintenance of Maldivian art

  • Working to develop the field of art

  • To seek financial and technical assistance from Maldivian and foreign sources in the development and promotion of arts, technical products and workmanship

  • To provide opportunities to develop in the fields of arts in Maldives and from abroad

With that, the management of some agencies previously under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Arts has also been transferred to this Ministry. They are:

  • National Bureau of Classification

  • National Center for the Arts

  • National Art Gallery

  • National Library

  • National Archives

The mandates assigned to the ministry regarding media regulation are:

  • Formulate policies for the development of print media and electronic media in the country and facilitate the development of these sectors

  • Registration of print media and electronic media resources in Maldives

  • Register and maintain the register of journalists and writers working in Maldives

  • Organise and manage the election of the Maldives Media Council

The ministry is run by Ibrahim Waheed, who is also the owner of Sangu TV.
