Hussain Amr, who unsuccessfully contested The Democrats party's internal elections on Saturday for the post of the party’s president, said on Monday that he would remain in the party and refused to comment on the acceptance of the results.

After the vote, The Democrats announced the results at 8 pm a day later, Amr lost the election by a margin of about 400 votes. However, the results uploaded on the party's website at 2 pm showed that the interim chairman Hassan Latheef won the election by a margin of about 300 votes.

The results are now available on the website:

  • Hassan Latheef: 1,817 votes

  • Hussain Amr: 1,497 votes

  • Invalid: 25

  • Total: 3,339

Although the figures on the website matched, the results announced by The Democrats Election Committee on Sunday did not. The party has been criticized on social media.

Speaking to Atoll Times on Monday, Amr said he did not want to talk about the election results at length. He said The Democrats were formed with great hope for the youth who wanted to bring about change. He said the party won 15,000 votes even when the people knew it would not go first or second in the presidential election.

"The public knows we won't go second. But they gave us 15,000 votes. So we have to move on. I'm not going to talk about this [dissatisfaction with the result] anymore. I'm going to end it at this point," said Amr, who became Labeeb's running mate for the presidential elections.

He did not respond to repeated questions on whether he would accept Saturday's results. Amr said he has made two posts in this regard.

"It is in the tweet as well. Everyone knows how things went," Amr said without answering a question directly.

He did not want to talk about it further because, Amr said, the election was linked to the expectations of many members.

"Then if this happens to me alone, it is not right to talk about it. What matters to me is not the position but the destination," Amr added.

"I think I can still work and... stay in the party. I am now an ordinary member of the party," he said when asked if he would remain in the party.

In addition, Amr said:

  • He will continue his political work

  • He is also thinking about contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections

  • He hasn’t decided on a specific constituency yet

Before the results were announced on Sunday, Amr expressed his concern in a post on X on Sunday. In the post, he recalled the sacrifices he had made in the past. In a post on X on Monday, he congratulated all The Democrats candidates who won the election.

Of the 5,834 registered Democrats, 54% voted in Saturday’s election. 70 candidates applied for a total of 32 positions.

Some of the other Democrats nominees:

  • The party vice-president: Mohammed Shifaz (public), Hussain Firushan (youth), Aishat Alaika (women)

  • Female Leader: Fatimath Hamdha

  • Youth President: Mohammed Maseeh

Democrats said on Sunday that the results were delayed until after the complaints were properly investigated. It did so to 'prevent any fraud', the party said.
