Ex-minister Dunya to contest parliament election
Parliamentary elections are expected to be held in early 2024.
Former minister Dunya Maumoon on Sunday filed her nomination papers to contest the PPM-PNC parliamentary primary.
The PPM-PNC on Thursday opened nominations for its primary, to be held on January 23, with the deadline expiring at 6pm on Monday.
Parliamentary elections are expected to be held in early 2024.
After submitting her nomination papers to the PNC office to contest the primary for Hulhumale South constituency, Dunya said in a post on X that it was her earnest wish to serve the people of Hulhumale to the best of her ability.
"I ask you the people of dhekunu dhaaira to place your trust in me to advocate with the government for your development & prosperity," the post read.
Dunya:
-
Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom's daughter, Dunya served as the foreign minister during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen, from 2013 to 2016
-
After resigning from the cabinet amid disputes between Maumoon and Yameen, she rejoined the government as a state minister of health
-
She left the Yameen-led Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and joined the Maldives Reform Movement (MRM), founded by Maumoon
-
Later, she joined Maldives National Party (MNP), led by Dhangethi MP Mohamed Nazim
-
After the defeat of the MNP in the first round of the presidential election in September, Dunya rejoined the PPM ahead of the runoff
The PPM-PNC joint senate has decided that only those who are registered with either of the parties by Tuesday will be able to contest the primary. Members who are on the register by that date will also be eligible to vote in the primary.
In addition, the requirements for contesting the primary include:
-
Meeting all requirements set out in the constitution and the laws for an MP
-
No disciplinary action against the member by the party
In addition to those requirements, four other factors will be considered:
-
Be a reputable, honest person
-
Experience in parliament and the constitutional assembly
-
Familiarity with the constitution and laws
-
Extent of service to the party
