The new Commissioner of Police (CP) Ali Shujau has said that he will work to rehabilitate children involved in criminal gangs and activities.

Shujau said this in his first statement to reporters after taking over as CP. Not accepting questions at the meeting, which ended with only a statement, he explained the details of what he planned to do as CP.

Shujau said police always receive information that children under the age of 18 are recruited by groups and recruited into gangs. He said the police had previously conducted a rehabilitation program for such children and brought them under police custody.

He said he intends to restart the program.

“The children involved are being discussed with the Department of Juvenile Justice for rehabilitation,” he said.

He added that he would zero down on the gang leaders within the next five years. He said he would shape police operations in that way.
