The Elections Commission (ECC) has amended the rules of political parties to allow more than one person to apply for permission to form a political party.

The commission gazetted the amendments to the political party rules on Sunday.

At a press conference on Sunday, EC Vice-President Ismail Habeeb detailed the two main changes under the amendments:

  • When a political party is newly formed, more than one person can apply for permission to form a party

  • Political parties or persons authorised to form political parties to register as members through the dedicated portal

“It is something that political parties have already noted that when a new political party is formed,” Habib said.

"After repeated requests from some parties, the commission has decided to allow more than one person to apply for permission to form a party."
