MDP membership exceeds 50,000 after new registrations
The MDP had set a deadline requiring members to be registered by midnight on the same day in order to vote in the upcoming election.

The Elections Commission of Maldives has reported that around 4,800 individuals registered as members of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on Wednesday, bringing the party’s total membership above 50,000.
The increase followed the opening of applications for the party’s Chairperson position. The MDP had set a deadline requiring members to be registered by midnight on the same day in order to vote in the upcoming election.
Secretary General of the Elections Commission, Abdullah Unais, stated that 4,876 individuals joined the party on Wednesday based on Commission records.
According to the Commission, the party’s membership has now reached 50,588 when recent registrations are included. The official figure published on the Commission’s website, which stands at 43,784, has not yet been updated to reflect these additions.
The Chairperson election is scheduled for June 12. The deadline for submitting candidacy applications is set for the end of next month.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem have announced their intention to contest the position.
Before the party split ahead of the 2023 presidential primary, the MDP’s membership stood at 57,000.
