Falah steps down from MDP elections committee
Falah, who serves as Chair of the committee, said the decision takes effect until the conclusion of the party’s chairperson election.
Former Member of Parliament for West Henveiru, Mohamed Falah, has recused himself from the Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Elections Committee.
Falah, who serves as Chair of the committee, said the decision takes effect until the conclusion of the party’s chairperson election.
His move follows reports linking him to support for Member of Parliament Meekail Ahmed Naseem, who is contesting for the chairperson position. Allegations had circulated within the party that Falah had shared Meekail’s campaign material on social media. Falah denied the claims, stating they were not accurate.
He said he considered it appropriate to step down from his role at this stage of the election process.
Following his recusal, Falah stated that he would take part in Meekail’s campaign.
“You will see me in Meekail’s campaign from now on,” he said.
The development comes after the MDP opened applications for the chairperson position. The party has also set a deadline for voter eligibility, stating that only members registered by the cut-off date will be allowed to vote in the election scheduled for June.
The eligibility decision has drawn responses from within the party, including from former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.
The party also recorded an increase in membership applications ahead of the deadline, with about 5,000 new members joining in one day. Total membership has exceeded 50,000, according to party figures.
