The Maldives National Defende Force (MNDF) has come out Wednesday evening to carry out water-draining operations in several parts of the city due to heavy rains.

Heavy rainfall since evening has caused flooding in parts of Male, making it difficult to walk and drive.

The army is working to drain water from the worst flooded areas. As such, the MNDF said, the troops are operating at:

  • Boduthakurufaanu Magu, near Boduvalhu-house*

  • Kudakudhinnge Bageecha, children’s park near Kalaafaanu School

  • Former West Park area

  • STO flour warehouse area

According to the MNDF:

  • In the most flooded areas water reached the pavement

  • Three houses were flooded and sandbags were also provided

The MET office has issued heavy rainfall warning for the region stretching between Kaafu atoll to Dhaalu atoll. A yellow alert has been issued as well. Winds will be up to 40 mph.

The agency had on Tuesday warned people to be cautious about rain, strong winds and rough seas over the next three days as the cyclonic circulation in the eastern part of the country is crossing the Maldives and heading towards the Arabian Sea.

On the 31st of last month, heavy rains also caused flooding in Male. Male received 118.2 milliliters of rainfall on the day.
