The project to modernise the roads in the capital city Male will solve the long-standing flooding problem in the city, President Mohamed Muizzu said on Tuesday.

In a post on X on Tuesday, the President said that the government will focus on providing assistance to the people affected by the rains.

The President said that if everyone cooperates in the important works that need to be done to reduce the damage to people’s lives, houses and property during the rains, the works will bear fruit.

"Thus, one of the most important objectives of the project to improve all the roads in the city is to solve the flooding problem in the city. When the project is completed, a permanent solution will be provided to the long-standing flooding problem in the city," he said.

The President said that the road development projects in many islands of Maldives will be carried out as planned every year.

Construction and Infrastructure Minister Dr Abdullah Muthalib too took to 'X' on Tuesday saying that the biggest challenge facing the city's roads is that they do not work in accordance with the design of the roads.

Referring to the Chinese-funded road construction project, the minister said he would give priority to establishing an appropriate stormwater management system to find a permanent solution to the problem.

“The project will be carried out by surveying and designing the entire city. When the project is completed, the flooding problem will be solved,” he said.

The rains that have been falling in the city since early this afternoon have caused flooding in the streets of the city.

MNDF Fire and Rescue Service personnel are working to drain water in the IGMH area, West Park, Pizza Buona, Dhiraagu and Dharubaaruge areas.
