The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has advised the public to suspend sea travel until Wednesday due to forecasts of severe weather conditions associated with the strengthening southwest monsoon.
In a statement issued Monday, the MNDF said the National Meteorological Agency (MET) has forecast unusually rough seas across the Maldives during this period. According to the advisory, maritime safety is likely to be affected.
The MNDF has requested the public to avoid all non-essential sea travel until weather conditions improve. For those required to travel, the advisory emphasised monitoring weather reports closely and avoiding travel during the night.
The MNDF also advised against undertaking sea journeys during periods when the NMA issues yellow or orange alerts.
“This is necessary to avoid potential hazards,” the statement said.
The advisory comes as many families prepare for travel during the school holidays, a time when sea routes see increased activity.
The MNDF has called on the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions until the weather situation stabilises.
