New mayor says to crack down on illegal street businesses
Fruit and vegetable trade is common on the corners of small streets and alleys.
Adam Azim, who took the oath of office as the mayor of Male on Monday, said he would try to stop illegal businesses in the streets of the city.
Azim told reporters at his first press conference at the city council that one of the things he noticed when he visited houses for the mayoral campaign was the illegal businesses on the streets.
"Especially they run things with vegetable shops. They sell them and throw garbage all over the street," he said.
"We will soon start working through environmentalists and in collaboration with the police to stop this."
Fruit and vegetable trade is common on the corners of small streets and alleys. Usually such places are run by expatriate workers.
