The Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) has expelled Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir for ethical issues and his ticket to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections has been confiscated.

Jabir won the primary with 252 votes on Saturday to contest the upcoming parliamentary elections.

However, the MDP issued a statement on Monday evening saying that Jabir has been expelled from the party and will not be allowed to contest the elections on its ticket.

One of the reasons cited in the statement for his dismissal was using explicit and inappropriate language against the general norms of society in public whilst being a member of the party.

“This act is prejudicial to the interest of this party and its ordinary members. The Action Committee of this party has decided not to allow Jabir to contest the 20th parliamentary elections on behalf of this party and to expel him from the party with effect from today," the statement read.

In addition to this move, there are some hindrances barring Jabir to rejoin the MDP. They are listed as:

  • Jabir will be able to rejoin the MDP if the party’s National Assembly decides

  • Even if the National Assembly grants Jabir MDP membership again, he will not be able to contest any party post or primary for five years from that date

Jabir rejoined the MDP in June last year. He was elected to the current parliament as an independent candidate way before.

The MDP took action against Jabir over an ethical issue at a time when videos of him were circulating on social media. Some videos show him speaking very abusively to the public. He also can be seen making very vulgar gestures at them.
