President Mohammed Muizzu called on island councils on Thursday to work with the government to implement projects strategically due to the current economic situation in Maldives.
The president made this call upon the councils during his visit to Thaa atoll, speaking to the people of Kinbidhoo.
“I can also start things here in name the day after tomorrow, because the election is coming. I won’t do it like that," he said.
On the contrary, the President said that he would bring wholesome development to the people with complete sincerity, and asked the councils and the people to support him.
The President then called on all the islands of the country:
-
During this month, all island councils will work with the ministries to prioritize the development projects needed by each island
-
The ministries will then bring them to the President's Office; and it will be decided
"If we can't take development in a systematic manner then we will never be able to come out of this abyss, -what abyss? It is the economic abyss we have plunged into, and we will not be able to achieve meaningful, sustainable development unless we come out of it," he said.
Therefore, he asked the councils to arrange projects in priority within this month to overcome this difficult time.
The President said the government's decision to prioritize the most important projects has been welcomed by agencies such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He said the economy is improving and expanding, increasing revenue and development works. He will fulfil the expectations of the people of all the islands, he added.
