Losing the support of former president Mohamed Nasheed's support was the primary reason behind MDP's defeat in the last presidential elections, former president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih lamented Tuesday.
Speaking during a campaign event in Noonu Atoll Manadhoo on Tuesday, Solih urged losers of the party's parliamentary primary to back the winners and find a way to work together.
"We [MDP] held a primary to chose a presidential candidate. It was highly competitive," he said.
"However, after the primary ended they could not find a way to work together. The reason why we lost the presidential election was the failure to work together."
Nasheed had contested against his childhood friend and the then incumbent president Solih in the MDP primary and lost. Soon after the rift between the two widened and Nasheed backed by senior MDP lawmakers left the party and orchestrated a breakaway faction to form the Democrats.
Nasheed did not contest the presidential elections but fielded a candidate from Democrats who came in third.
Solih on Tuesday urged his party to learn from such mistakes.
"If we are divided and can't work together, it is highly likely that we don't get the desired outcome," he added.
