Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail has been summoned to appear before the police in connection with the MVR 14 million Road Development Corporation (RDC) scam.
The police sent a summons to Fayyaz instructing him to appear before it by 3 pm on Thursday. Fayyaz made an X post announcing it, while attaching a picture of the summons.
As per the summons, Fayyaz is being summoned in connection with the RDC case as he is alleged to have received financial benefits from RDC scam funds
Former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih, on Wednesday said that the summoning of opposition political leaders to the police without any basis is a reflection of the atrocities and injustice that was seen in the past.
Taking to X as well, Solih said the bitter series of undermining the power of the legal institutions is recurring, but added that “the people can be served without being cruel”.
Fayyaz said he had done nothing that could warrant such an accusation, but said “I will give my full cooperation to this investigation, even if it is a politically motivated one,” he said.
The police had first announced their investigation in the case at a press conference on March 3. This is a case that the agency has been investigating since 2022, police said then.
The police are probing a case in which money in the RDC's account was transferred to the personal account of an employee holding a senior post there and the money was then transferred to various individuals and companies.
