Parliament appoints Sergeant At Arms after 3 year hiatus

He was appointed to the board of directors of STELCO in the government of former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih.

After three years of suspension of the then Sergeant at Arms of the People’s Majlis Mohammed Haleem, a new person was appointed to the post on Wednesday.

Haleem was suspended from the post on 27 January 2021, over a case being investigated by the General Committee of Parliament. Subsequently, he was dismissed from the post on August 24, 2022, after two years of suspension from work but with pay.

A new person was appointed to the post at the parliamentary session held on Wednesday; Major (retd) Thol'hath Hassan, G.Saathanuge/Male. He was appointed to the post by a unanimous vote of 35 members.

Major (retd) Thol'hath:

  • He joined the MNDF in August 1998

  • He retired from the service with twenty years of experience, in January 2020

  • He was appointed to the board of directors of STELCO in the government of former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih

According to the parliament’s rules of procedure, the Sergeant-at-Arms is the primary person responsible for upholding the rules of Parliament, as directed by the Speaker, during proceedings. He also has many responsibilities related to the security of the parliament. The appointment and dismissal of persons to this post is done by a vote in the Parliament.

The salary for the post is MVR 32,000.
