Around 15 hectares of land in the third phase of Hulhumale has been dredged and the land reclamation work in the area is going on at a fast pace, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said on Thursday.
Sri Lanka's Capital Marine and Civil Construction Company (CMCCC) started the dredging of the west coast of Hulhumale on 22nd of September.
HDC had earlier said that the work, which was temporarily suspended, will resume in December. While the progress of the project was shown to the media on Thursday, HDC said that the land reclamation work for Hulhumale Phase III is being carried out in two parts.
It said:
-
10 hectares of the area designated as the first phase has already been dredged
-
Five hectares of the second part have also been dredged
-
Dredging of the unfinished section of the second phase is currently underway
-
A total of 63 hectares have been allocated for dredging as the third phase of Hulhumale
The HDC on Thursday said it is asking for the removal of vessels moored in the area as it hampers the dredging work. These vessel owners have been given the opportunity to anchor their vessels outside the area, it said.
Work on the third phase of the project came to a halt in late October. The HDC said the work came to a halt after Stage One was completed.
The reasons for suspending the project were:
-
Contractor decided to carry out dredger repairs after completion of Site A (Stage One)
-
Anticipating coral regeneration in November and December every year, and not dredging during that time.
