Govt issues MVR 13 million worth of loans to farmers

The Ministry of Agriculture has disbursed a total of MVR 13 million in loans to farmers under the government's 'Dhanduveri Nafaa' loan programme.
Agriculture Ministry State Minister Mariyam Vishama told a press conference on Monday that the loans have been disbursed to private individuals and companies involved in agriculture. The press conference was held to inform the public on the ministry’s progress in the first six months of president Dr. Mohamed Muizzu administration.

MVR 8.82 million in loans to companies
The Dhanduveri Nafaa Loan Program provides loans for agricultural development, new technology-assisted activities such as poultry farming and agri-forestry and value-adding activities in agricultural products.
The loan is available up to MVR 100,000 without collateral and up to MVR 2 million with other conditions, she said.
Vishama said the Ministry of Agriculture has a register of farmers and according to the current information, 7,627 people are registered with them.
53% of them are women and 47% are men. Vishama said the register is also being updated.
