As many as 23 species of coral found in the Maldives are at risk of extinction, according to studies by the environment ministry.
The environment ministry released the data on studies carried out under the country's Red List, including 39 species of corals, to identify species at risk of extinction.
Based on the results of these studies, the findings were divided into four categories.
-
Critically endangered: 23 species
-
Endangered: Six species
-
Vulnerable: Seven species
-
Near threatened: Three types
Locally well -known two kinds of corals, known as ‘Maagandu Hiri’ and ‘Ufuligaa’ were also included in the study, but most of the species examined did not have specific local names.
"This study demonstrates the need for urgent efforts to protect corals," the ministry said in a tweet.
"Working with hope by developing a plan to protect such animals will help protect these species and pass them on to future generations."
The species of corals seen in the country are close to 200. The reefs formed by these corals are an important part of the environment that provides shelter to more than 700 marine life.
