President Dr Mohammed Muizzu said that one of the pledges that Maldivians must make on the occasion of the Islamic New Year that begins on Sunday is to unite to reform the country.
In a Hijri New Year address, the President on Saturday evening spoke about some of the problems facing the country and some of the things that need to be considered in overcoming them.
The President said that many problems have arisen due to neglect in recent years. Thus he noted:
-
Many foreigners are living in Maldives illegally
-
Society neglects to prevent drugs and gang crime and effectively guide such people
-
Lack of familiarity with economising habits such as making ends meet and cutting costs
The President highlighted how the name ‘Hijri’ of the lunar Islamic calendar means migrating to a better place. Therefore, with the New Year, let us resolve to support the reform and constructive efforts initiated by the Government for the security and prosperity of Maldives today, he said. He also said that in the same spirit, we should start working for the development of the country.
The President highlighted the life of the Prophet and said there were many such examples to be learned from his life. One of the lessons learned from the success of his work in Medina is the importance of unity of the people for the development of a country, he said. He noted:
-
Families need to be well bonded
-
Work must be carried out diligently and actively
-
The need to maintain neighbourly relations
-
Everyone should aim for a prosperous life
-
If everyone adopts the habit of not wasting and avoiding unnecessary expenses, the entire country's economy will become stronger
-
For the benefit of all, the laws and regulations must be enforced
