The name of former Elections Commission (EC) Vice-President Ismail Habeeb has been sent to parliament for approval for appointment as a member of the Human Rights Commission (HRCM).

The HRCM membership became vacant after the former Vice-President of the commission Dr Ahmed Adham Abdulla resigned from the post last October.

Secretary General Fatimath Niusha read out the letter sent by President Mohamed Muizzu to appoint Habib to the post.

According to the president's letter, Habib was the candidate he considered to be appointed to the post after the nomination was opened in accordance with Article 5 of the commission's law. The president also sent the names of other candidates with the letter.

The matter has now been referred to the Human Rights and Gender Committee of parliament.

  • Habeeb resigned from the EC in March after serving two terms. According to the commission's law, a member can serve a maximum of two terms of five years

  • Habeeb was first appointed as a member of the commission on 13 March 2014

  • Habeeb was appointed to the commission for the second time on 13 March 2019
