The Government of Japan has provided USD 1.2 million (MVR 18.4 million) in grant assistance to Maldives for the Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).
JDS is a four-year program starting in 2020. The USD 1.2 million signed on Tuesday is the amount scheduled for this year.
Japanese Ambassador to Maldives Takeuchi Midori and Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer signed the agreement at a ceremony held at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
This assistance is aimed at providing opportunities for Maldivians to pursue master's degree courses in social sciences from Japan's top universities.
Every year, six eligible Maldivians are given the opportunity to study in Japan under the programme.
The JDS project, which was launched by Japan in 1999 and is currently implemented in 21 countries, is being implemented in Maldives in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Higher Education.
