Staff of the Civil Court have filed complaints with the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) alleging that Chief Justice Maryam Waheed is discriminating against employees and influencing the recruitment of new employees.

Some employees of the Civil Court said on Sunday that there are complaints inside the court that the court officials, including the chief judge, are hiring people they want. The employees sent a letter of complaint to the JSC on Wednesday.

The complaints filed with the JSC state that the courts are places of justice and if the employees do not get justice, the common people will not get justice.

The letter said that the selection of employees in the Civil Court is influenced by the senior employees of the court.

“This, which all the staff of this court knows and wants to put an end to this practice, but lacks the courage to try to stop it, has become a traditional practice that has been going on in this court forever” the staff letter said.

Additional charges against the chief judge are:

  • Preparing examinations for the convenience of the preferred candidate

  • Assisting some employees with their work and making their presentations

  • A presentation submitted at the interview for the position of Legal Officer for a court officer, was made using the login of the Chief Judge

  • The heads of various levels of the court, have told the staff that this is what former senior judges have done

  • While giving jobs to preferred applicants, operations of important divisions of the court like procurement, HR and administration are run without an administrative head

  • The Chief Justice temporarily appoint employees of their choice to run administrative sections, taking advantage of their position

"If the presentation was prepared by the senior judge, it is a violation of the judge's code of conduct and the use of positional influence to obtain an undue advantage”, the case states.

The complaint filed by the employees pointed out that the court situation and nepotism within had created a culture where dissatisfied employees leave.

“This year has also seen the loss of many employees of the court,” the complaint said.

The JSC has decided not to make public the details of complaints against individual judges.
