The Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau has said that the police need to be more prepared and capable of dealing with digital crimes and the changing crime landscape, as well as the capacity to prevent crimes committed using Artificial Intelligence (AI).

A special ceremony was held at Iskandhar Barracks on Sunday to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the police as a separate institution. At the ceremony, plaques were presented to the employees who have served in the police service for more than 25 years.

Speaking at the ceremony, Shujau said that looking at the past 20 years, public opinion regarding the police service should be clarified.

When you think about that question, you can see that the police have worked hard day and night over the past 20 years to make the country a safe and secure place.

However, he noted that the police need to be more prepared for the changes in the crime environment.

"A lot of work needs to be done. The police need to be prepared for the changes in the crime environment. They need to work differently to protect the society from the biggest threat we face; of drugs and criminal groups, as well as proper investigation of organised crime”.

Shujau added:

  • Police capacity in investigating terrorism and financial crimes should be increased many times over

  • Police should be modernised and given the ability to use artificial intelligence to prevent crimes before they are committed

  • The President has assured these resources will be provided to the police

Police training is shaped to make the police civilised and professional, he said.

The police and their families believe that the police are at risk in their jobs and every policeman is looking to ensure that people are kept safe through their police work, said Shujau. Shujau, however, noted that criticising and praising the work done by the police is a part of the service.

The police service has been provided since 29 March 1933 under the aegis of the National Security Service. The police service was established as a separate civilian institution on 1 September 2004.
