Police chief Naveen retires after 32 years of service
Naveen was appointed commissioner following the resignation of Ali Shujau, who stepped down from the post last year.
Police Commissioner Ismail Naveen retired from the Maldives Police Service on Wednesday, ending his tenure less than a year after taking office.
Naveen, who assumed the role of commissioner in June last year, announced his decision on Tuesday. In a post on X on Wednesday, he said he was retiring after nearly 32 years of service in the police.
He said his decision was based on respect for the police badge, trust in the institution, and service to the country. Naveen added that working in the police service had been an honour.
Speaking to Atoll Times on the day he decided to retire, Naveen said the decision was made for personal reasons. He said delaying the decision would not have provided a better time to retire, adding that the country’s security situation was stable at present. Naveen joined the police service as a patrol officer.
Naveen was appointed commissioner following the resignation of Ali Shujau, who stepped down from the post last year.
In November, the Parliament of the Maldives Finance Committee passed a resolution recommending the suspension of several senior police officers, including Naveen, over alleged involvement in fraud cases linked to the police business company POLCO. The Parliament has yet to decide on the recommendation.
