Man gets life prison sentence, MVR 100k fine for drugs

The fine must be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in a year.

A man was sentenced to life in prison and fined MVR 100,000 by the Criminal Court on Tuesday for finding 9 grams of drugs in a cigarette box he threw away when he was stopped by police two years ago.

The Criminal Court sentenced Hassan Sifah to life imprisonment and a fine of MVR 100,000.

The fine must be paid to Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) in a year.

After deducting the days spent in jail, the sentence is 24 years and 11 months in jail.

The court ruling reveals that:

  • The incident happened on February 7, 2022

  • He was stopped because his motorcycle did not have two mirrors

  • When police saw him, he threw a box of cigarettes on the street and ran away

  • The cigarette box was searched in his presence

  • 95 rubber packets of drugs were found in the cigarette box
