The resolution garnered overwhelming support, with 137 votes in favour.
Maldives on Sunday expressed its strong support for the United Nations General Assembly's adoption of a resolution seeking an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Israel’s obligations concerning the activities of the United Nations, international organisations, and third states in Palestinian.
The resolution, which was presented by Norway in collaboration with a group of Member States, garnered overwhelming support, with 137 votes in favour. The Maldives, as a co-sponsor of the resolution, lauded this development as a critical step in upholding humanitarian efforts in the region.
In a press release issued by the foreign ministry, the Maldives emphasised its commitment to advancing the objectives of the United Nations and humanitarian organisations operating in Palestine.
“Maldives believes that this is a crucial step forward to uphold the work and mission of the United Nations, humanitarian organisations and of third States to protect and preserve the humanitarian operations in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,” the statement read.
The ministry further highlighted the significance of the widespread support for the resolution, describing it as a testament to the international community’s dedication to achieving a sovereign and independent Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Maldives has consistently maintained its position in favor of the Palestinian cause, advocating for a two-state solution in accordance with international law and UN resolutions. The country has also actively participated in global forums to voice its support for Palestinian rights and self-determination.
