Maldives condemns Israeli minister's call for synagogue build
Maldives expressed its deep concern over the provocative remarks, which it views as a severe affront to the religious and historical significance.
Maldives on Tuesday strongly condemned a recent statement by an Israeli Minister advocating for the construction of a synagogue within the holy Al-Aqsa Mosque.
In a statement issued by the foreign ministry, the Maldives government expressed its deep concern over the provocative remarks, which it views as a severe affront to the religious and historical significance of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Al-Aqsa Mosque, located in Jerusalem, holds profound spiritual importance for over 1.8 billion Muslims around the world. As a revered place of worship and a symbol of Islamic heritage, any suggestion to alter its status is seen as an attack on the sanctity of the site.
The Maldives government has called on the Israeli government to respect the established historical and legal status of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in line with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
The Maldivian government emphasised that such inflammatory statements by senior Israeli officials undermine ongoing efforts to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza strip and risk exacerbating religious tensions, potentially leading to further instability in the Middle East.
In its statement, the Maldives urged the international community to act swiftly to prevent any actions that could alter the legal status of Jerusalem and its sacred sites. The Maldives also called for robust measures to protect the rights of the Palestinian people.
Reaffirming its unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, the Maldives reiterated its commitment to the establishment of a sovereign and independent state of Palestine, based on pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The government emphasised its solidarity with the Palestinian people in their pursuit of self-determination and justice.
