Government has asked all authorities to take necessary steps to prevent sellers from charging 200% to 2,000% profit on imported medicines, President Mohamed Muizzu announced Wednesday.
The president made the announcement in a post on X.
“The prices of medical drugs imported and sold in the Maldives market have so far been at a profit of between 200% and 2,000%,” the post read.
"All relevant agencies have now been instructed to take necessary measures to prevent such huge profiteering in the sale of drugs."
The president said the measures will reduce the market price of medicines and the price paid by Aasandha national health insurance scheme. The schedule and further details of the changes will be announced soon, he added.
“As a result of this change, a large amount of money (hundreds of millions of rufiyaa) being wasted by Aasandha will be saved and the money will be used to improve the quality of health services,” the president said.
