President Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday ordered the reform of the procedure for bringing patients to Male for emergency treatment.

Delayed emergency treatment and lack of timely treatment has cost the life of a 13-year-old boy from G.A. Villingili on Saturday.

President Muizzu has sent his condolences to the child's family.

A statement from the President's Office said:

  • The President received the news of the death of Mohammed Jaah Khalid, Penzia-ge/G.A. Villingili with deep sorrow and concern

  •  At this grievous occasion, the President extended his condolences to the parents and family of the deceased

  • The President has asked all the relevant authorities to share with him, all details of the arrangements that were made to bring Jaah to Male for emergency treatment

"The President has directed all relevant government agencies to reform the system of bringing patients to emergency treatment to prevent such a tragic incident from happening again," the President's Office said in a statement.

The statement added that Island Aviation Services, which operates the national airline Maldivian, has now been asked not to wait for agencies such as Aasandha to arrange for a patient to be evacuated by air for medical treatment.

"Island Aviation has been instructed to prioritize the delivery of the patient as soon as possible upon such a request by a health care provider," the President's Office said in a statement.

Transport Minister Mohammed Ameen on Saturday said the national airline's flight schedule will give priority to emergency airlifts henceforth.
