The Ministry of Higher Education has disbursed MVR 85 million to undergraduate students under the government-funded higher education scheme so far this year.
The scheme, launched in February 2019 as part of a presidential pledge by former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, covers tuition fees for undergraduate students enrolled in higher education institutions in the Maldives. Eligibility and payments are governed by the ministry’s established regulations.
According to official figures, a total of 8,086 students are currently studying under the scheme. This includes 1,100 new students in 2025, comprising 704 female and 464 male students.
The ministry also reported that 2,068 students are expected to graduate this year, of which 1,355 are female and 713 are male.
As of now, 3,888 students remain registered under the programme—2,406 female and 1,482 male students.
The number of graduates under the scheme has reached 5,412, which includes 3,517 female and 1,895 male students.
Since the inception of the scheme, the government has disbursed a total of MVR 235.8 million to eligible students.
