Parliament passes Abbas Shareef as chief prosecutor
Abbas was appointed to the post by a unanimous vote of 85 members of parliament in an extraordinary sitting held on Tuesday.

Parliament on Tuesday approved the appointment of Abbas Shareef, currently serving as the Legal Secretary at the President’s Office, to the vacant post of Prosecutor General (PG).
Six candidates contested for the post of prosecutor. However, President Mohamed Muizzu sent only Abbas' name to parliament.
The parliament's judiciary committee on Monday unanimously approved the appointment of Abbas to the post.

The post of Prosecutor General has become vacant following the resignation of Hussein Shameem on August 22. He resigned after parliament decided to impeach him on the grounds of no confidence.
