Maldives customs seize over 9kg drugs

The passenger and the seized items have now been handed over to police for further investigation, customs said.

Customs seized more than 9 kg of drugs smuggled into Maldives by air.

Customs said in a statement on Friday that the items were seized during an inspection of an air cargo shipment, a postal package and a passenger on a flight. They include:

  • The shipment and postal package arrived on Wednesday

  • The passenger arrived on Monday on SriLankan Airlines flight UL103; He is a 65-year-old Maldivian 

Customs initially analysed the suspected drugs and found them positive for four types of drugs:

  • 349 grams of heroin seized from passenger on flight

  • 582 grams of cathinone from the package that came in the post

  • 5.2 kg of cannabis and 2.8 kg of ecstasy seized from air cargo shipment

The passenger and the seized items have now been handed over to police for further investigation, customs said.
