In connection with a tragic accident that occurred on April 14, in Hulhumalé, the driver responsible for causing the death of a man has been formally charged with multiple criminal offences.

The incident took place west of the Ooredoo Building, resulting in severe injuries to two Bangladeshi nationals, Sheikh Shuaib and Masood Rana. Masood Rana succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.

The driver, identified as Mausoom Haleem from Kethi, K. Kaashidhoo, is now facing three serious charges. The Prosecutor General's (PG) Office has confirmed that Mausoom has been charged with:

1. Reckless conduct causing death

2. Assault charge

3. Damage to property

The most serious charge of reckless conduct causing death stems from the fact that Masood Rana, who was riding a motorcycle, was trapped under Mausoom’s vehicle. Prosecutors explained that Mausoom was reversing his car at high speed when the incident occurred, leading to Masood Rana’s fatal injuries.

The assault charge was filed in connection with injuries sustained by the second victim, Sheikh Shuaib, who was also on the motorcycle with Masood at the time. He was trapped under the vehicle alongside Masood and suffered serious injuries that required immediate medical attention.

The damage to property charge relates to Mausoom losing control of his vehicle, which resulted in severe damage to another car parked in the vicinity of the accident.

This incident is just one of several recent accidents in Hulhumalé. Another fatal crash, involving a sports car and a motorcyclist, occurred in front of the Ooredoo Building near Central Park earlier this month, resulting in the death of a man named Hassan Samah. The increasing number of dangerous road accidents in the area, particularly this month, has alarmed authorities and residents alike.
