The Utility Regulatory Authority (URA) on Wednesday announced a 10% discount on electricity and water bills for the month of Ramadan.
As in previous years, customers will receive discounts on their bills in Ramadan. The authority stated that the discount calculation will be based on a comparison with a customer’s “normal month” consumption.
According to the URA, the “normal month” is determined by excluding high-consumption months such as February, March, and April, and taking the average of the remaining nine months of the previous year.
The billing process for domestic metres in March will be as follows:
-
If the difference between March’s consumption and the “normal month” consumption is less than 10%, a 10% discount will be applied to the March bill.
-
If March’s bill is lower than the “normal month” bill, customers will still receive a 10% discount.
-
New metres billed in March and customers who have registered but not yet been billed due to low usage or averaging will also receive a 10% discount.
On Wednesday, State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) also announced changes to the billing process for Ramadan. The company stated that last year, one of the challenges was applying the discount over two months. To address this, a single bill will be prepared for the entire month of Ramadan.
To implement this:
-
STELCO employees will begin taking readings from Thursday to prepare the Ramadan bill.
-
The next reading will be taken at the end of Ramadan, on 30 March.
