The arrival of multiple cargo vessels at the Malé Commercial Port ahead of the Ramadan period has led to delays in unloading containers, according to Maldives Ports Limited (MPL).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, MPL said a high number of container ships have called at the port during the current period.
The company said seven container vessels arrived at the port between 12 February and 12 noon on Tuesday.
From these vessels, a total of 3,901 containers were scheduled to be unloaded, while 2,700 containers were scheduled to be loaded.
As of 12 noon on Tuesday, 1,250 containers remained to be unloaded and 1,118 containers remained to be loaded.
MPL said two of the vessels that arrived during this period had not yet completed operations and remained at the port.
The company said space constraints at the commercial port have created difficulties when several vessels arrive at the same time.
MPL said the total capacity of the container terminals in the Malé area is 2,750 containers.
However, there are currently 5,338 containers stored at the ports in Malé and Hulhumalé.
The company said its operations teams are working to organise the unloading and loading of cargo as soon as possible.
