Opposition presidential candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz on Monday pledged to develop an international airport in GA. Villingili with an integrated tourism project.

Muizz made the promise while addressing a campaign rally in the island on Monday during his presidential election campaign.

"It is essential to have an international airport in G.A. atoll. So our development plan is to convert the existing airport in Kooddoo into a training airport and develop an international airport at Villingili, including the area Ekefaru near Villingili," he said, noting that it was important to realise his vision of turning Huvadhoo atoll into a tourism hub.

"And a major integrated tourism project with the airport”.

There is already an airport in Kooddoo, which is about 10 minutes from Villingili. Speaking at the rally, Muizz said that even if an international airport is built in Villingili, the Kooddoo airport will not be wasted. The Kooddoo airport will also be used as an airport for training, he said.

At another rally on Sunday evening, Muizz announced his vision is to develop Huvadhoo Atoll as a tourism hub with 10,000 beds. Referring to the vision, Muizz said on Monday that it is important to have an international airport in both Gaafu Alif and Gaafu Dhaal atolls.

  • The airport in G.Dh. Kaadehdhoo will be developed to international standards

  • With that, 10,000 beds will be established and the two provinces will grow together

"This is not just a story. In the past, [former] President Yameen even determined how it could be done. However, when the government changed, it didn't happen," he said.

"I'm telling you for sure. I'm telling you for sure, I'll do it for you.

When the international airport is developed, some land will be dredged, he said. When the land is dredged, the land needed for Villingili will also be increased, he said.

“With the increase in land, the land you need [for Villingili] to build housing, a sports complex and so on,” Muizz said.

Some other promises Muizz made to Villingili:

  • A dormitory for students to live at a university campus

  • To install a decompression chamber that treats diving incidents

On Monday, Muizz has also said that an integrated tourism project will be brought near the island when he visited G.A. Kolamaafushi.
