Opposition PPM-PNC candidate Dr Mohamed Muizz on Monday pledged to expand tourism in Addu under the name of Asseyri Tourism, which includes creating 10,000 jobs, adding 6,000 beds, and developing a seaplane hub to benefit the four southern atolls.
Muizz made the pledge while speaking at a public rally held at Hithadhoo PPM camp on Monday. He is campaigning in Addu, which is a stronghold of ruling MDP, for the September 9 presidential election.
"There is no point in a government that cannot provide job security for the people who need jobs. There is no way to create [or] expand more jobs without developing tourism in this city," Muizz said.
"So, our plan [and] what the people want is to expand tourism. Hopefully, the concept of Asseyri Tourism will become a reality”.
Elaborating on Addu's Asseyri Tourism concept, Muizz said that it is a concept to expand tourism in Addu by having the government investing in it. He said it was a "feasible concept" with direct government involvement to make it a sustainable policy.
"It will create about 10,000 jobs," he said.
Muizz said Asseyri Tourism will further expand Addu's tourism and a seaplane hub will also be established.
“Bringing a seaplane hub here will benefit not only this city, but it will benefit the resorts of Fuvahmulah, GA. and GDh. atolls,” Muizz said.
He said important development projects were launched in Addu during the government of former President Abdulla Yameen, including the establishment of a seaplane hub.
"At the end of his tenure, a lot of things started and continued. But today, it seems that the development of this country has lagged behind manifold. Once again, it has to be taken up," he said, referring to the instability of the government's projects.
"But its possible. If the people are with us, we can once again bring a golden era of development to the country."
Muizz said that under his administration, the development aspirations of the people of Addu will become a reality. He asked his supporters to not doubt it.
"The hopes of the people of Addu are very sweet and should be sweet. The people of Addu are thirsty for development and they need development and deserve development. We will work to achieve this," he said.
