SriLankan Airlines mulls scrapping Gan flights over losses
Now there are two flights a week and an average of 40-50 passengers per flight.
SriLankan Airlines may suspend flights between Colombo and the southernmost Maldivian atoll of Addu due to mounting losses, the airline's General Service Agent (GST) in Maldives Ace Aviation has said.
SriLankan first launched direct flights between Gan International Airport and Colombo's Bandaranike International Airport in 2016. Scheduled flights resumed on 4 December 2021 after being suspended due to Covid-19. There are now two flights a week between Gan and Colombo.
Mohamed Firaq, Managing Director of Ace Aviation, told Atoll Times that SriLankan's intention is to suspend the routes that are affecting the airline.
"They wouldn't want to go seven years without a good load, right? But they operated even during the most difficult times," he said.
"They are not stopping right now, but they will decide before next March.
Firaq noted that SriLankan Airlines is undergoing restructuring due to its mounting losses.
