Tourism in the southernmost Addu, which was a British protectorate before the Maldives' independence, will be promoted in the United Kingdom, tourism minister Ibrahim Faisal said on Saturday.

Inaugurating the Destination Addu 2024 symposium to develop a comprehensive city brand and promote Addu as a premier brand, the minister said the city is rich in history and natural beauty. Addu should be properly branded and brought to the world tourism arena, he said.

There are still signs of the British presence in Addu and the heritage ministry has decided to rehabilitate the sites for tourism, he said.

“Addu will be promoted especially to the British market,” Faisal said.

The city council has also decided to promote Addu by participating in the World Travel Market (WTM) fair in the UK, he said.

"We have a very rich history with the British. The UK is one of the best places to do this," he said.

The minister assured the council and the industry that the MMPRC will support the promotion of tourism in Addu.

Faisal said the brand of Addu will reflect the culture, hopes, future and potential of the tourism industry.

Noting that direct flights should be brought to the region to bring the resorts into operation, Faisal said he would always support the development of tourism in Addu.
