Maldives, India discuss Indian consulate in Addu

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday that Maldives and India have held talks to establish a Maldivian consulate in Bangalore and an Indian consulate in Addu.

In a joint statement issued by visiting President Mohamed Muizzu after talks with Prime Minister Modi during his current visit to India, Modi said Maldives and India have a long-standing friendly and close relationship.

Maldives has a high commission in New Delhi and a consulate in Trivandrum. The Indian high commissions in Maldives is in Hulhumale.

Earlier, talks were underway to set up an Indian consulate in Addu during the government of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Bangalore is a city where a large number of Maldivians go for studies and medical treatment.

Modi said the two discussed Maldives' infrastructure development during his meeting with President Muizzu.

Modi said the Greater Male Connectivity Project or Thilamale Bridge project, which is being implemented under the credit line and grant assistance of India's Exim Bank, will accelerate.

“India is also ready to help build a new commercial port in Thilafushi,” Modi said.

President Muizzu and Prime Minister Modi on Monday inaugurated several projects carried out with Indian assistance in Maldives. These include the Hanimaadhoo airport runway project and 700 housing units.
