Police launch awareness operation on rising fake bank slips
Police had earlier urged the public to be vigilant after noticing people making fake transfer slips using an application.
Police have launched an operation called Operation Fake Slips to raise awareness among businessmen about the increase in sending invalid bank slips.
Police said on Friday the operation is aimed at preventing businesses from accepting invalid bank slips in trading.
The operation is being conducted by the police's anti-scam centre. The centre and Economic Crime Investigation staff, as well as neighbourhood support officers and college volunteers from Male, Hulhumale and Villimale are also participating in the operation.
Operation Fake Slip is a series of awareness programmes to be conducted by the Anti-Scam Centre, police said. In this operation:
-
This month is dedicated to identifying and raising awareness about invalid slips
-
At the end of the month, police will visit all the shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels in the Male area
-
Information will be provided to identify and raise awareness of the extent to which customers are submitting invalid bank transfer slips after obtaining the service
-
Checking the bank statement for authenticity and checking the transaction reference
-
Shops will also be given information for further familiarisation by checking whether they are familiar with identifying authentic slips and doubtful transfer slips
-
Whether shops use the bank's official application, SMS or email to verify payment before obtaining services or selling goods
-
Information will be provided to raise awareness of any issues related to invalid or late bank transfers in the past six months
-
They will also provide information on how to deal with any fraud or suspicious activity and the importance of identifying the person's characteristics
