Parliament Speaker and People's National Congress (PNC) Chairman Abdul Raheem Abdulla said on Saturday that he has no intention of contesting for the presidency and remains committed to supporting President Mohamed Muizzu for a second term.

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Abdul Raheem addressed speculation regarding his presidential ambitions and his relationship with President Muizzu.

"I have never intended to run for the presidency and will not in the future," he said. "I am committed to working towards ensuring President Muizzu serves a second term."

Abdul Raheem also commented on former President Abdulla Yameen’s announcement to run in the next presidential election. He noted that the opportunity to contest is a right for anyone who meets the constitutional requirements.

"President Yameen has that right. However, we are confident that when President Muizzu seeks re-election in 2028 after completing his five-year term, support for him will increase," Abdul Raheem said.

He emphasised that while Yameen's candidacy might present challenges, the political landscape is fluid, and the PNC remains focused on securing a second term for President Muizzu.

According to Abdul Raheem, the PNC's constitution allows an incumbent president who is a party member to secure the party’s presidential ticket for a second term without a primary. This rule would automatically apply to President Muizzu if he decides to run in 2028, although no official announcement has been made yet regarding his candidacy.

Addressing rumors of a strained relationship with President Muizzu, Abdul Raheem stated that their working relationship has strengthened over time.

"Our relationship is even stronger than when President Muizzu came to power. We have known each other since 2012, and our collaboration has only grown since then," he said.

Abdul Raheem highlighted the trust President Muizzu placed in him by proposing his name for the position of parliamentary speaker after the 2023 elections.

He also dismissed claims of political tension, pointing out that they meet and collaborate frequently on key issues.

"The relationship and trust are growing day by day," Abdul Raheem said.

He reiterated his commitment to supporting President Muizzu and the PNC’s agenda, emphasising his role in strengthening the party's leadership and political unity.
