Authorities in the Maldives have remanded five Sri Lankan nationals in custody for 30 days following their arrest aboard a fishing vessel carrying a massive haul of drugs.
The operation, which took place near Haa Dhaalu Atoll Makunudhoo, led to the seizure of 468.6 kilograms of illicit substances with an estimated street value of MVR 1 billion.
The Sri Lankan men were taken into custody at 12:45 PM on Saturday after their boat was intercepted.
According to police reports, the seized drugs included 344 kilograms of methamphetamine and 124.6 kilograms of cocaine. The operation is considered one of the largest drug hauls in recent Maldivian history.
Following their arrest, the suspects were presented before the Kulhudhufushi Magistrate's Court on Sunday, which ordered their detention in a custodial jail for a 30-day period pending further investigation.
