Five immigration officials are under investigation for allegedly extorting money from expatriate workers in the Maldives.
Home minister Ali Ihsan confirmed the matter in a post on X on Thursday, stating that the police have initiated an investigation into the allegations.
“The president has instructed me to take the strictest legal action against those who are disrespecting the uniform and losing the trust of public institutions,” the minister wrote.
The post did not clarify whether the accused officials have been suspended from their positions. Ihsan added that relevant authorities would provide updates as the investigation progresses.
The investigation comes as the government continues its operation to identify and deport undocumented foreign workers. Thousands of individuals have already been deported as part of the ongoing initiative.
