Maldives foreign minister Abdulla who currently serves as president of the UN General Assembly, on Wednesday presented a Maldivian Boduberu drum to the UN Secretary General António Guterres in his farewell call.
Shahid, as the General Assembly president, holds regular monthly meetings with Guterres. With Shahid’s one-year term coming to an end in late September, he met with the UN chief for the last time on Wednesday.
Shahid shared a video of the meeting on Twitter and said that he had given Guterres a purely Maldivian farewell gift -- Maldivian Boduberu embossed with exquisite traditional lacquer work -- as a parting gift.
Shahid said that he would always remember the collaboration with Guterres to tackle international challenges. He thanked Guterres for his friendship and assistance.
Shahid was elected president of the General Assembly on 7 June 2021, with the support of 143 countries. He took over the post on 14 September 2021.
