President says 'grateful nation' thanks Shahid for successful UN term
President Solih congratulated Shahid on his "successful term" as UN General Assembly president.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Tuesday praised Maldivian foreign minister Abdulla Shahid for a successful term as the president of the 76th Session of the UN General Assembly.
Shahid was elected UN General Assembly president on 7 June 2021 with the support of 143 countries. He took over the post on 15 September 2019.
President Solih congratulated Shahid on his "successful term" as UN General Assembly president.
"Your 'Presidency of Hope' has added fresh impetus to multilateralism and brought the UN closer to the communities it serves. On behalf of a grateful nation, thank you," the president's Tweet read.

In his speech, he spoke in Dhivehi and English.

He thanked the government and those who worked with him for the success of the Maldives.
Shahid began his speech in Dhivehi, saying that even if the Maldives is a small island nation, it is "a proud nation under the shadow of an independent flag that loves international law, justice, peace and stability."
Shahid said that being appointed as the UN General Assembly president was the result of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih's strong foreign policy.
